When the Wus wanted to offer something new and exciting for dessert beyond the traditional staple selection of Chinese fortune cookies and oranges they never could expected the interest and demand they discovered. Within a year after expanding their dessert menu, the phones were ringing off the hook for Happy Eater cakes for weddings and birthdays.
And so, after 17 years in Alexandria, Virginia, in July 2002, the restaurant / bakery was transformed into a full-service bakery located in Centreville, Virginia under the new banner Cakes by Happy Eatery.
Cakes by Happy Eatery found its niche by making entertaining easy and making clients happy. The excitement begins when customers enter the bakery and see the extensive assortment of items from which to choose. Cakes by Happy Eatery offers an exciting array of pastries, cookies, cakes and a catering menu sure to become your favorite and most dependable kitchen helper.
The bakery is famous for its European genoise sponge cake that is light and not too sweet. There's a near endless variety of filling and icing combinations available to create the perfect confection for any taste. Some classic favorites are the Strawberry Mousse Torte, Raspberry Amaretto, Bavarian with Fresh Fruit, and Mocha Truffle. For chocolate lovers, the bakery’s Chocolate Ganache, Chocolate Doberge, Red Velvet, or the sinful chocolate decadent series — including the Peanut Butter or Turtle Decadence — are a must. The cheesecake is distinctively New York style; the buttercream is made with three ingredients – butter, sugar, and vanilla. But most importantly, the cakes are made fresh and from scratch by very talented bakers in our very own kitchen.
Entertaining is an artistic expression from hosts to their guests — it needn't be complicated or stressful. Excuse the pun, but entertaining should be a piece of cake. We help by determining how our clients perfer to entertain and then prepare the menu accordingly. Whether preparing a cold or warm holiday buffet, it's never surprising that our menu items are a consistent hit at all types of events.
Cakes by Happy Eatery is a family business. The Mrs. Wu, the elder, is chief quality control manager. Victoria, Daughter #1, oversees daily operations; Charlotte, Daughter #2, handles advertising; and Emily, daughter #3, creates new products. All have the considerable task of of being official taste-testers and demanding connoisseurs.
Although, the patriarch of the family passed away in 2005. Mr. Wu, as a consummate entrepreneur, left a legacy that provides lasting inspiration. From his beloved first business — an oriental food wholesale supply and distribution warehouse (in which he also grew beans sprouts!) — he developed an immensely popular bakery with distinctive and delicious assortment of products and many loyal customers. Today, Mrs. Wu — with her extended family of dedicated bakers, pastry chefs, and sales associates — continues to expand the bakery’s clientele by offering a scrumptious variety of items made fresh every day.
